Please feel free to leave your experience and knowledge here in these posts. They will help everybody to guide them in the use of their tablet in the androidworld.
1) Useful programs + links
2) Way of using them
3) Problems and questions
4) Experience
5) Expectations

Most of the time the needs are very specific but probably can be grouped in similar fields. Look at PDF-annotating. Almost everyone is interesting in one way or another. ... But it's really not so very developed yet. The choice is limited and are those apps really well-designed? Can Adam add something to the use of it, having three panels? I can imagine one panel with the pdf, the second with the annotating tools and stamps and the third maybe a database linked to the annotating information? Actually , do we know if Adam will allow ONE app to work with the three panels? Would we like to have this possibility?
That's how I would like to reflect on the subjects here, with your help and experience.

  1. lol, just posted on notion ink that I was waiting until posting would be enabled. But you'll probably never read that comment, since my posts there always "await moderation" (my nick is breese there). :)

Anyway, the thing I had in mind, is not really a "workfield", but more of a hobby. I started making a hydroponic garden for in the apartment (fed up with "not being able to do gardening" and grow my own food stuffs), and decided it would be really really convenient to be able to keep track of certain things.

So I was thinking of some kind of "gardeners" application. One where you create convenient plant charts, choosing between soil grow and hydroponic growing. In general it would be nice to be able to conveniently keep track of track of things like:

-> For each plant or group of plants, a data sheet including:
    x germination dates
x transplantation dates into final growing space (hydroponics medium) or bigger recipients (soil, outdoors)
x adding pictures to accompany the growth journal of each plant or set of plants
x an image overlay of the previous picture at 50% transparancy (or something along those lines) so you can align the next picture you take pretty much the same way
x a way to play the pictures in a fast slideshow to "see" growth or confirm possible "stunted" growth
x a way to interact with other users of the application (as to ask for help of other growers when you run into problems/illnesses/..., sharing pictures to diagnose and remedy, ...)
x a way to insert daily/weekly/... PH and EC levels of your water solution, amount and frequency of waterings, and the possibility to extrapolate charts (showing on daily/weekly/monthly basis the increase of nutrient levels)
x inclusion of lunar cycles (perhaps getting them from an online service?) to see when best to germinate/plant/clone/trim/harvest plants
x when starting a journal for a plant or set of plants, the possibility to insert "key points", at which the application will warn you. Such key points can be "increasing nutrients", "time to trim certain plants", the appropriate lunar conditions, expected harvest times, "nipping" back your tomato/bean/... flowers for better tomatoes ... (also needs to be visible on the chart)
x perhaps an inclusion of some general plant information so the program can suggest some of it's own "key points" when you choose a plant that is in the system
x a way for others to add plants that are not in the system, that automatically get shared once 10 others or something confirm that the addition is valid and correct

Anyway, that's just of the top of my head, I was hoping to find some other people interested in this field, and perhaps also some competent in making these kind of things. There are probably quite some more things I would add, but I'll wait to do that until I actually find out that more people are interested since this post is long enough as is. Next time I'll try to do it in a less chaotic manner. ;)

  2. "Hobby" is a nice groupe too. Nice to be the first to react. This what I meant. Greetings!

  3. I'm an architect myself:
    So to clarify:
    Profession: architect.
    Needs for me are :
    - being able to read BIG pdf's of A3 plans of the houses I build.
    - having possibility to annotate those pdf's with executionremarks.
    - If possible those annotations (numbers) could be linked with a database of standard remarks.
Being able to print the plans again with a list at the site of the remarks used would be really super.

  4. Sorry, can't help myself:

    For the pictures:
being able to pull down "grid lines":
x you can pick a picture to define the "base" of the plant, by pulling a line down that levels with the spot where your plant exits the ground
x every picture you take after that, will have this base as standard and you pull down another line to the top of your plant
x the application will calculate the percentage of growth (by measuring the distance between the two gridlines) and will be able to notify if there is stunted growth or if there is too much stretch and such
x it will stop notifying of course, when the vegetative stage of the plant is over
x and of course it'd be nice to see the overal growth in a nice chart, I like charts ;)

a "plot allotment" system, as a base user interface (app will start with this) to easily find the plants you want information on
x some basic shapes to choose from are inserted (rectangles, triangles, squares, ...) to try and copy into a basic design, the layout of your growspace/garden/field
x the option to choose "small plant based grow", or "bigger garden/field grow" (small grows don't need the wind directions and such :) )
    - for smaller veggie grows (such as mine), you can insert a 3x3 grid for example, and each square will be linked to the data sheet of one of my plants. The "notifications" will light up the square of the plant the notification is for into a certain color, letting me know something needs to be done there. When I click on the square, the data sheet will pop up, with the notifications regarding that plant. When I've done them and OK them, they go into the history list of that particular plant.
    - for a larger grow, such as gardens/fields, you can do this for plant groups and add orientation to your layout (inserting where in your map North is and such) as to get a clear map of the garden/field. For example plants that need to remain (and NOT be harvested) to grow into seed plants, can get a RED color, so if anybody wants to help or is coming over because you offered them some of your veggies in your garden and you're not home, they can look at the adam and find out what NOT to touch. You'd also be able to add "tasks" to certain plant groups, so anybody can open it and see what needs to be done to what batch of plants on which day, and which plants are available for harvest.
    - a combination of both of the systems above, should also be necessary for less organised gardens. So a basic design showing where edible plants are located in the garden, and when you click on one of those patches a sort of "zoom" in with individual plants (for permaculture gardens for example)

  5. I replied to your post at Notion Ink, but my replies are always awaiting moderation :-)

I am an architect as well your list is just about where I started.

Open, annotate and save large .PDFs
    Show and maneuver Sketchup files
Dream about a cloud version of Sketchup
tag photos to existing conditions / dwgs
tag photos to tablet base databases
    punch Lists
    existing conditions surveys
    Presentations
    Notetaking tied to office files
Real time photo collages combinin new and old images with handsketching
    Revit model viewer

Some of this is just developing the right applications, but the tablet format should be an impetus to get this done.

I assume we will have to deal with gorilla in the room AutoDesk at some point. I'll leave that for another discussion.

    I just want my Adam!

  6. Hi Joe,

    Nice work...

Can you also add System Engineers as a profession?

  7. Hi Joe!
    Nice job so far.
Is it possible to breakdown the Work-fields even further? For example, under teachers we have categories like languages, science, marketing (Economics?), etc. Other work-fields can be broken down too.

    Hey, wish you success.
    Viva Adam!

  8. By bow I'ma gathering information how to do it but yes, I'll breakdown it as you ask. Client is king;)

  9. I am developing an application for Network Engineers. The application will allow you to build a fully functioning network in a visual environment be it Cisco, Juniper, or HP and then configure the devices through telnet, ssh, or if it is the first configuration through USB to serial adapter. There will also be an option to export the configurations as text.

  10. @ Jason.smedley. Glad to meet a developper. Just out of curiousity. Most of people don't have BIG needs. Most of the programs we think about are streight forward and probably not so difficult to devellop. Can you sometimes read the needs of the people here and give us once in a while, an idea of how difficult it would be to devellop an application to realize these needs? I myself got acces to Androidinventor. I'm new however in programming, but reaaly hope one day soon to be able to devellop some apps. Hove no idea however how difficult this will be and if I'll succeed. Hope so, maybe with helpof people here. Thanks for visitting and stay tuned I would say.

  11. I think even if we cannot make one app to use for the Eden UI, we can write that one app to emulate Eden UI if you want. I am an electrical engineer not a professional app developer but I am learning to program android apps. I have some idea on how difficult it is to program a PDF annotating tool on android and I do not see it being crazy difficult. I feel some 3D games are tougher to make and still are available on the android market. I believe when honeycomb rolls out, bunch of those pdf annotating softwares will be out. It should an interesting project for me as well. I will look further into it and see if it's feasible.

  12. hi digitalk...
I'm learning too, but not having an androidtablet yet makes it difficult to start. I'm waiting for my Adam to start ;)
By the time you'll start develloping the annotating tool I hope to have gathered enough information here about the needs of such a program so that your app can really be of no-concurrence. I really want to make more than just annotating: a link with a database or spreadsheets seems really interesting. You should be able to create a list with simple content (example: nr 1= "comment", nr2= "another comment". Then you can annotate with stamps containing nr 1 or nr 2. As a summary; the legend with the comments from the database are printed along. ..The database should be sharable and updatable at any time (through 3G?) so that co-workers always work with the same , always growing , list. ... and of course , the reader, annotator must be able to handle BIG pdf's of texts and drawings. Goodreader on Ipad did better then others but still doesn't work fast enough.
