For those not knowing it yet: Free paid apps every day on Amazonmarket

These last days a lot of people got their Adam. These are enjoyable days , but in the same time very confusing because of the big Honneycomb saga going on. NI posted an "official" update for Honneycomb last week, but it's not very clear yet how official and workable it is. So I'm staying on the last official NI version BEFORE HC and wait peacefully until I get a better view on the situation. That means that as long I'm not switching to another rom I will not have access to the market to get my apps.

HOW TO GET YOUR APPS THEN WITHOUT CHANGING ROM?
1) Special Internet sites:
Go to the internet links mentionned on the "Android tips and Tricks"- tap of this blog. These are links to sites providing free apps. However they do not update themself automatically.

2) Majjj.com
See "interesting links and discover! Thanks for existing. People , please upload as much as possible there. It's made by an adamuser and all apps are supposed to work on it, but sometimes they don't. Very nice site to visit regularly.

3) The AMAZONmarket:
A lot of people are switching to another Rom because they want access to the market. For me it's not such a big issue, because I use the AMAZONmarket app.

Amazon has it's own market. It maybe doesn't have all the apps, but most of them are there at disposition. An advantage they have on the official Androidmarket is that every day they give a paid app for free!!!. That's actually the nicest thing that happened for my tablet since I got it now several months ago.

It does however have a "problem". It works only for people in America. But there is a solution . Here are the instructions on how to solve this:

1) Create yourself a new gmail account. You will use it to link your amazon account on.
2) Go to www.fakenamegenerator.com and get yourself a nice new identity in America (visa, address, name,...)
3) Go to Amazon.com and create yourself a new account using the data from 1) and 2)
4) be sure to  activate the "1-click" option in Amazon too
5) Download the "Amazon appstore".app at Majjj.com !
6) Install it and sign in with your gmail address.
7) Enjoy!
The apps are linked to your gmailaddress and update are mentionned.

Conclave added in Bloglist

Hi there everyone,
After some time now I'm back again. Just watching how everything was evolving these last months I'm ready for some new action.
The bloglist is a fine startingpoint for all newcomers. Please head overthere for all latest news on the Adam.
I finally added Notion Ink's Conclave and Tabletroms .
If some of you know other blogs or links, please feel free to post them to me.

My Homemade traveling-box (adaptation of original Adam box)

Since I was in a creative mood yesterday, I also adapted my Adam box so it would fit in my bag. So after making my sleeve (see previous article), I thought it would be nice to have a more robust case to transport my Adam in. That's why I adapted the box, keeping the original idea of the integrated stand, but making it less thick.

Here are the steps I followed and of course the result: (it would be nice to cover it with a nice material like leather or something, and just leaving the logo)

 The original box
 See how fat it is!
 Keep the original protective padding
 Open the sides
Tape the connections and draw Adam profile-lines
this line will be the new folding line: the rest has to be cut away after folding
Do this for all the sides and glue them back or use double sided tape
Now the stand: it has to be slightly adapted to fold in between the protective padding: narrowing the sides

Now attach the padding with double-sided tape . Let it follow the upperside of the box
 The result!
Adam can be used inside of this box: the rubber already has the necessary gaps!

Do the same with the cover: make it thinner by refolding it following the profile of the under-box
 et voilĂ !

My Homemade sleeve

I was looking for a nice sleeve, but couldn't find it. So, I made it myself. This is the most flexible sleeve I could think of for home-use: you can keep your Adam safe in it and it's very nice looking and easy to handle.

I integrated some magnets at the four corners. This will make both sides connect perfectly in the open position with the flap folded behind.

Due to the added thickness, the grip of the Adam is enhanced. Adam itself is attached with Velcro strips. Do you like it?

I integrated the logo

Adam doesn't lose his looks
You can fold the flap of the sleeve behind where it fits perfectly due to the magnets
Adam is fixed into place with velcro

Inside view of the cover: see the integrated logo and magnets that keep everything in place when folded over
The supporting plate below is smaller than the cover

An survey has been created to provide input on what roms people are using and the reason for their choice

(request from Albert Wertz)

An anonymous survey has been created to provide input on what roms people are using and the reason for their choice. All Inputs are anonymous, so no worries about divulging anything that may null a warranty. Please be honest. We ask that you follow the below link and fill out the survey. This will help members of NIH make better roms, will help NI understand what customers want in a rom and the reason they have chosen to change or stick with their stock rom… again, please be honest and only fill it out once for each adam you have. Please do not attempt to skew the results.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDZpbGxNR01wZV9yTEtfbzUwSkJ4eUE6MQ
We ask that you spread this link to as many other adam sites as possible. we need as many adam owners as we can to fill this out to get a complete opinion on the device.

Meet the ideal outdoor-companions: Adam, Goliath Adamant Pro™ and My Ditto

Lots of people got interested in Adam because of his promising new type of screen: the PixelQI. That screen has the particularity to act like a normal LCD-screen indoor and to be very readable outdoors, in the bright sunlight. This is where you will see your Adam working in it's full glory. One thing is sure: outdoor means more risks! You'll have to protect your valuable item like no-other.

That's where Goliath Adamant Pro comes to the rescue. This, still under development, case is your best friend to protect your Adam ... and it's clever too!

The Goliath Adamant Pro™ can be used in three ways:

1) Santoprene or TPU only cover (material hasn't been decided on yet) which is also called the "SecondSkin": This material gives us higher impact resistance, less compression, and it wont cut or tear. It's intended as a basic protection for our Adams, with the added perk of screen protection. The latter is done by elevating the corners of the SecondSkin to just above the screen. If you were to lay the Adam flat face down, the screen will never touch the surface.
2) SecondSkin + Polypro Outer Shell: The Polypro is durable and flexible and it tightly wraps around the SecondSkin. The combination of the two will dissipate impacts across the SecondSkin like a bike helmet does.
3) SecondSkin + Polypro Outer Shell + Lid: You can click off the lid and turn it around so you can either use it as a stand or fold it double for comfort, like you would be holding a magazine. If the lid is closed it protects and closes off all ports including speakers. When open all ports become accessible. Special care has been taken to allow the speakers to perform as they should with the case open.

In it's full glory, the Goliath Adamant Pro™ adds 4mm to each side of your adam, which considering the protection it delivers, isn't all that much. If all goes well the Adamant Pro™ should be in production by the end of April. Other models are also lined up for production: The Goliath Colossus™ will be Impact, Dust, and Water proof, a still nameless slimmer profile case and possibly even an EMP protection suite that will fit around the Goliath Adamant Pro™.
But now, who the hell is My Dittohttp://www.my-ditto.com/
Well this year Adam was quite popular on CES, but last year somebody won the award for best innovation: The My Ditto from Dane-Elec. It's a NAS (Network Attached Storrage device) . What makes it so special? Well it's a hard-disk, actually two hard-discs are possible (2nd one to copy the first: RAID 0-1) max 2x2T connected to your router by Ethernet-cable and actually NO software to install. Instead you get 2 USB-keys, that you just have to plug in a computer to get access to your hard disk with a password. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOUR COMPUTER IS LOCATED AT HOME OR AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD !!! As long as you have Internet-access, the key does the rest.
"But... won't that only work on a PC or a MAC ?!" Of course not, it was a "best innovation" winner remember ? It runs on pretty much any OS. Even on our Android devices! Simply get the FREE Android App and you'll be able to access the drives from your Adam, anywhere, anytime!

Now, can you imagine that when you're going on vacation and are taking lots of pictures, you'll be looking at them on your Adam PQi 3G ? But then you'll have the added luxury of immediately storing them safely on your hard-disk... at home! You simply have permanent access to all your media. Of course at home it backups all your computers connected to your router and supports VPN, Itunes, Ftp,....stream everything to your mediaplayer, XBOX or PS3. Only thing you'll have to get, is a decent 3G carrier subscription that won't make you bankrupt for when you don't have a normal wifi connection available. ;)
So when put together for outdoor use, I think we can truly speak of a very remarkable trio.

"EDIT 1: You will be asked for your Order Number, but the column has been hidden to prevent abuse. The information will still be collected, but will only be visible to Notion Ink.

EDIT 2: If you have any suggestions of things you'd like to see added to the actual letter, or if you would like to see some changes: post them here or PM me about it. I'll try and incorporate your requests.

Hi to all, this thread is no obligation, just a suggestion. If it hails enough response, I'll send the email to notion ink. I'll even send it as a signed for snail mail letter if you guys would like me to do so.

Many have mentioned sending a joined email to NI. So I wrote the letter I'll be sending to NI on behalf of all who respond below, IF there is enough response to it. If you would like to be included in this request, go to the following links:

Dear Notion Ink Support,

We have decided to send a collective email, as to make your work easier. The customers listed in the spreadsheet, are requesting an update on their Adams status. Please help us out.

May we ask you to please not give us any unrealistic estimates. If it'll take another month, then please just say so, we can handle it. Just don't change the date every other week. Take a roomy estimate, if you can then ship sooner, we'll be exhilarated instead of frustrated with the many guesstimates that have already come and gone! No offense!

ARC-mouse versus GoBIKE

Hello there ,
Last year I bought my bike. A revolutionary type op foldingbike developed for DAHON by GoBike. It was the last one of a prototype serie they used for developing their µ-serie. It has some special particularities like:
- a belt!
- asymmetrical fork
- anti-turnover system
- Titan saddle
- locking-mechanisme
- ...
Here it is:

Why I tell you about this bike? Well it has some similarities  with the ARC mouse from Microsoft. Look for yourself:

Who ordered What ? And when ?

    (article by Heyloa Keyloa)

A few Notion Ink Addicts have been trying to gather all the information of the people that have ordered an Adam together in one place. They've been putting it together in a google spreadsheet. This way, they hope to extrapolate some useful information out of the sheet, regarding how NI handles their shipping and such. Perhaps it can even be used to mail "group cases" of support issues to NI when the time comes. Such as not having received a tracking number or a status update after the deadline of the 10th March and then including a whole list of people with the same problem in one email. Who knows ?

And if all of that doesn't work out, it's just plain fun to play with the list view of the document and find out some stuff about our fellow Adamites.

They've been having issues with trolls though, putting in swear words, replacing entries, deleting everything altogether, ... Basically messing everything up. Because of this, there is now a CLOSED spreadsheet. Hopefully all 450 people that entered their info in the original spreadsheet, will take the time to enter it again in this one.

You can enter your information via this form:
Afterwards you can view your info and play with the "list" view, right here:
    https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AoCJkre7H4rqdDkzOVBMV3B0Uk44eUFDMldONXlyZlE&hl=en#gid=0
If and when your status changes or your order is delivered, then please send an update to the following email address: mbmadnih@gmail.com
Don't forget to include your timestamp and nick/handle name!

The post regarding this new spreadsheet can be found right here:

What to do while we are waiting?

(Thanks Heyloa Keyloa for the corrections)

I think that a lot of us don't know what to do with ourselves while we're waiting to get our Adam-tablets. So I took the liberty to make a list of some useful things we can do, besides the whining about our tracking-numbers:
    - Start your own Adam-blog! => Don't forget to mention it here, in the tab "Users-Blog".
    - Gather info about the best apps to install. => Share what you find in "AndroidTips".
    - Worrying about upcoming bugs and problems ? => Come and ask your questions in "AdamTips".
    - Look for nice accessories for your Adam, like minisdHCcards, silicone keyboards, stylus,.. and if you have found some interesting things? => Then please let us know in "AdamTips".
    - Are you developing your own stylus? A revolutionary item that also looks stunning? Are you the creative mind fabricating something new from rubbish? => Let's meet in the "ThinkTank"!
    - Still didn't find an answer to things you wanted to see working on your upcoming Adam: hard-disks, AdamTest as a digitizer, Adam as USB-keyboard,....? => "AdamTips" is the place to be.
    - Are you developing or trying develop your own apps or have some fabulous ideas for them ? => Then I hope to see you in the "ThinkTank".
    - Want to know the whereabouts of fellow Adamites ? => Then help along and let us know where you are at, in the "Language Tab".
    - Searching for profession specific applications ? => Come and join us in the "Work-field Tab" and let us know all about it. We're still looking for architects, doctors, teachers,... with nice ideas.
    - ...

It seems to me that most of the information we have now is spread in different forums and blogs. I would like to be able to gather and organize it here in some way. For this to happen, I'll need more of your input, ideas and conclusions. So spread the word. Tell people to join us here and I in meanwhile will think of a nice way to organize the information.

    Thanks for your help!

    Opening a new USERS-BLOGS-page

Heyloa Keyloa had a nice suggestion:
"Perhaps a "my adams configuration page" could be included, where people can add their own little blog page explaining all the stuff they installed on their adams, why and where to find the software. ;) "

So here it is. You are all invited there to post a link to a Adam configurationpage on your personal blog with a list of apps installed + links + useful information

    Invitation for creating regions!

I'm actually very curious to know how many people in my region/country will be, or already are, an owner of an Adam. Wouldn't it be nice to meet up and share our excitement?

I'm actually very curious to know how many people in my region/country will be, or already are, an owner of an Adam. Wouldn't it be nice to meet up and share our excitement?

So this is an invitation for everyone to create lists for each individual country or region. This blog can be a platform to do so. If you would like your country/region included in the region-sheet, then just put a little comment here mentioning your particular country or region. That way, we can all get an idea of where our nearest Adam-neighbors are located. Perhaps, we can even try to organize ourselves!

    Nice apps!

Go to the Android tips and tricks page for nice apps to install on your Adam. There is also a nice section about printing. Although I 'm still looking for a good general printing app that supports all wireless or network-printing without sharing.

    I ordered one

(Thanks Heyloa Keyloa for the translation!)

Here's my story of ordering the Adam:
I received my first mail from notion ink at 6:18am local time, which stated that I would receive my second mail (the one allowing for me to order) at 9am Indian time. This is 4am local time. Which made me think:"Whuh ? Shouldn't I already have received that mail ? " Eventually I received said mail at 11:37am local time. It said: AN ADAM FOR YOU.
It contained a link which sent me directly to the store and allowed me to put one aside for me. Step 1: SUCCESS!

Even the payment seemed to go smoothly, until verification that is. I got the same notification over and over again, being that they couldn't reach my bank. Initially I thought I was doing something wrong or that I made an error in filling out one of the fields ("all fields are mandatory" !). In the meanwhile, Rohan updated his blog with the specific message that we absolutely had to warn/call our banks. Well... I had already called visa, aka BCC, aka Athos. They reassured me that there would be no problem at all transferring money to India.

"Ok...", I thought:"What now?!". "Backup the whole ordeal?". "*shoot* I'm no longer receiving an order number?!" Well, needless to say that registered in my mind as "oh oh, not good".
When I again clicked on the same link, I did however get automatically re-directed to the payment section of the order and I could try once more. *relief!* I was afraid though, that they would charge me for multiple Adams, because of all my failed attempts. After three additional attempts, I just quit altogether...
I went back to reading the NI blog and could see that numerous people encountered the same problem. No answers from NI Support, none from CC-avenue (transaction manager). You did have to provide your bank name. So I tried again, with the name of a different bank. BCC this time, and another time with ATOS. I almost had a "eureka" moment, but .... nope ... a dud ... again.
Later that day I eventually decided to call my bank. I explained the situation to them, told them that whatever I tried, I couldn't make the payment I wanted to make. After being put on hold a few times, she explained to me that if I didn't use my card reader to verify the payment, any such payment would be blocked. That was news to me... I asked her if there was any way to circumvent this. She hesitated, and said:"Well, no .... and yes...". Eventually she gave me an email address from the main office of my bank to which I had to mail a file with all the print-screens of the different stages of the on-line order during payment. And also of my partially hidden Visa card. I did this instantly of course.
In the meanwhile, it was already 3.30pm. At 4pm the bank contacted me asking about the card number of my visa. He somehow connected a wrong visa number that didn't exist to my name. After I rectified that situation, the man went mute. No communication any more whatsoever...
Once I got home from work I wanted to try again, but this time I obviously logged in from my home computer instead of from the one at work. Which didn't work! So I kind of suspect that once you order from a certain PC, a file is saved somewhere telling NI systems that you ordered from that specific computer. And that it won't allow you to place an order from any other pc.
I again went to the blog to read more comments, and apparently after 7.30pm, some people were succeeding in finishing their order by paying for it. I had to wait until 9pm, before I could make it back to work to get to the same computer I tried my first orders on. I had left it on when I went home.

And guess what ? This time it worked from the get go!!! I also had to verify the payment with my card reader.
Lessons to be gotten from my story:
x once you start your order from a certain pc, you'll have to finish it from that one
x don't forget your card reader for verification
x be patient ! Perhaps it was just the over crowded server at CC-avenue that caused the problems ?
So there it is. I got to order my Adam. To all of you whom are still waiting to do so: I wish you good luck!!!

    Which ADAM would you choose?

Are the problems real concerning the screens? Lots of people get hooked on Adam because of this new screen they present on their tablet. A revolution. PixelQI is there as a nice combination of two worlds. People who thought of buying an e-reader suddenly see possibilities in a tablet that besides reading can also give them other functionalities. E-book-readers miss a lot of possibilities and Adam looks like the ideal tablet /reader. Outside with back light off it reads as good as an ereader (an Ipadkiller here for sure!); inside with back light on we get a regular colourful screen. Now it seems that colours are not that bright as on a normal LCD. Is it a problem? Can we live with it? Actually I would like high contrast when I watch a movie, but I'd never watch on my tablet , having my superp plasma at home....
The pixelQI also claims to use less energy. That's wonderfull. But how much less then the LCD? Maybe enough reason on itself to take that screen? Or is it just the fact we don't have a brilliant screen. The surface is mat to avoid reflections and reduce finger smudging. At work we don't have brilliant LCD-screens neither. It  would be very annoying for me as an architect drawing the whole day. We miss sometime this high-contrast feeling, but at the other hand never suffer from unwanted reflections. .... Of course these are professional monitors, very expensive, without "blochiness"....
So, these are just some thoughts I wanted too share. What are your feelings? What did or will you choose? (There is a little survey in the sidebar!)

    INTAKE THINKTANK

[ERRORUPDATE: click on the title if you want to go to the page] It wasn't possible to correct the error in the page bar above

First a nice little story I heard:

In a forgotten land, a man was sitting the whole day with his feet in the water enjoying every minute of his life. After a few days, an American that saw him can not help himself going to him and tell him to stand up. "Come on man!, Stand up" "Seek a good job and do something of your life!"
    "Why", replies the man
"Well, then you can make yourself useful and get money, lots of money!"
"Yes, but why!" replies the man "What's money good for?"
The American is surprised. "Well, heu..., then you will be able to buy everything and get rich!"
"And????" the man looks to him without understanding...
Finally the American replies: "Well, with lots of money you would be able to buy yourself an island and sit the whole day... with your feet in the water"......

However I would like to sit the whole day with my feet in the water enjoying my Adam, I could probably not resist to keep on thinking about how to make it better yet. That's why I chose this weeks comment from:
Heyloa Keyloa . He said... " I was wondering if a "notion ink innovations" (or something like that) could be added too as a menu. Just a place where people can talk about things that they'd like the notion ink to adopt in an Adam 2 or if possible in "upgrades" of the Adam 1..."

Thanks HEYLOA KEYLOA . I took this under consideration and added a page on the site: "Thinktank" I developed the idea further and would like to start something here:

I would like to start a thinktank about some aspects of tablets, their use and way to work with them. The tablet makers dictate us how we live and what we need, but maybe it should be the other way around. Maybe we should tell them what we want first. Adam is the first tablet developed with input of people from all around the world. That's a wonderful start! Adam 2 will and can certainly be even better. Now that Adam 1 is launched, it is interesting to think about what could have been done better to perhaps even (RE)DESIGN A WHOLE NEW CONCEPT, something compatible or complementary to Adam. What we don't know yet. That's the nice and interesting part of it. We don't know where it will get us.

I'd like to make a group of people from different work fields, and take us through  different phases to finally reach a new product really designed for everyone. Ideally the group would also contain technicians and developers and some people of NOTIONINK too. We want to build further on what NI started and help them.

    Phases
    1) Inventory: gathering as much as possible information, running ideas, needs,...
    2) Interpretation: searching for relations, connections, making schemes, ...
    3) Evaluation: what works well, what not
    4) the problems: what are the REAL problems and which are less relevant?
    5) Alternative options and solutions
    6) The design....

Who wants to be part of this? Everybody is welcome.

Annotating. How does the ideal app look like? (updated on 10 feb 2011)

Most of the time, peoples needs are very specific but probably can be grouped in similar fields. Look at PDF-annotating. Almost everyone is interesting in one way or another. ... PDF's are HOT: they are relatively light, easy-printable, universal,  capable of handling nice resolutions,...But it's really not so very developed yet when you look at the apps we have at disposition. The choice is limited and are those apps really well-designed?

Can Adam add something to the use of it, having three panels?
I can imagine one panel with the pdf, the second with the annotating tools and stamps and the third maybe a database linked to the annotating information? Actually , do we know if Adam will allow ONE app to work with the three panels? Would we like to have this possibility?
How would the ideal Adam app look like?

Also Printing: We could imagine having the possibility to print it with the used annotating-legend of the placed objects at the site of the page ...

    Known APPS:
( it's useful that when you place an app you also give a little appreciation next to the name and also rate it. If bad working apps are allowed here, just do't forget to mention it ;)

Ebooks: creating them yourself (updated on 31 march 2011)

    I found this software:   http://calibre-ebook.com
It allows you to create and convert your own ebooks. Let say you have a pdf. You can make an ebook of it. It's for free and runs on different Os systems (apple Os, windows, Linux).

    E-book creation tutorials

Various tutorials on how to create/convert e-books with calibre.

I don't know if we will be able to read ebooks files (epub? which formats?) But then this software can create lots of formats, starting from Word, Openoffice, Pdf's, Html,.... Surely Adam can read various files(I hope;). I even remember seeing on the NI-blog an image where I think we can see the pages curl (I like that:)

Free programs like scan2pdf can help here with scanning (through your printer) but interesting is the new booksaver coming up:
    see "http://www.gizmag.com/book-saver-scanner-from-ion-unveiled/17532/"
With the ionaudio booksaver: coming on this spring and presented at CES 2011 we get for the price of 150$ a Booksaver that claims to be able to convert 200 pages of a book in ereadersformat in 15 min.

    Somebody with experiences?
(To be clear: this chapter has the meaning to create ebooks from materials that you own and are permitted to copy for personal use, not for selling and making profit)

Solaro on Adam: will it replace our learningbooks?

Students. Adam is there for you. Apparently Adam will work together with the SOLARO app.The new post of Rohan today shows you how Adam and Solaro (will soon be available on Adam) can work together to help students learn in the digital environment. It seems to be some kind of internet-learning software. I don't know it so will check it out and inform you. We got this news just after I started this blog. Good news!
Apparently it provides Math, science and English arts. Right now California, British Columbia etc. More states will be added in June . The question is: will it be useful for other people around the world?
    What do you think?

    www.solaro.com

    What is SOLARO?

SOLARO is an innovative E-Learning solution with materials that are 100% compliant with each regions's core curriculum standards and customized to meet the unique learning needs of each individual student. SOLARO was built with three core principles in mind: Learning, Assessment, and Remediation.

    What's in it for me?
    Teachers:
Dynamic content aligned to your regional curriculum
Diagnostic assessments with detailed reporting that tracks progress and achievement
Ongoing visibility into the strengths and weaknesses of the class and each student
    Students:
Customized instruction based on your individual learning needs
A motivating incentive program that encourages learning and rewards success
Access to lessons and homework on smart phones and tablet devices
    Parents:
A safe, reliable, and accessible learning environment
Real-time reporting and updates on the progress and content mastery for each of your registered children
A proactive approach to your children's education by continuing the education process outside of school hours

This is a site for you.

Hallo there, hello Adam, hello world.
If you are open to help people and share some experience, or if you have question, this is a place where you can find your way. Being mostly concerned about people to work well with their tablet and use it at their maximum potential I'm interested to know what people do with their tablets and how they use it. If there are real pregnant needs, I suppose that it better to make a front about the item and who knows we will be heard. I hope Rohan from Notion Ink will read us and who knows share one of his ideas here too.
So feel free to share here.

To be clear this is a site that will only trie to gather and order information.

Also I don't have a structure really developed yet, but wanted already to start something up now. So in meanwhile I'll try to manage the information and publish regular summaries . Later , maybe with your help I'll be able to make a real site. Thanks
